While the timing of required documents may vary by university policy, all US institutions will generally require the following during the application process. Preparing them in advance will expedite the application review process:

- Transcripts (official transcripts will be needed before enrolment)
- Proof of English proficiency.

Proof of finances required for I-20
- Prior to receiving their I-20 for immigration purposes, students must show their proof of finances - typically bank statements and an Affidavit of Support
- The tuition, fees, housing and personal expenses listed on the I-20 are estimates of what the student will need to live and study at the university.
- These are not the amount students must pay but are estimates. The exact total will often differ slightly from the amount shown on the I-20.
- The purpose of these estimates is to prove to the U.S. government that the student has enough funds to live and study in the U.S. without having to work to support themselves.
Basic visa requirements and processes

- There are many different visa types in the United States but the most common visa type for students is the F-1 student visa
- Process for obtaining an F-1 visa
- Step 1: Apply and be accepted unconditionally to the university of your choice
- Step 2: Submit financial support documents
- Step 3: Receive Form I-20
- Step 4: Pay I-901 (SEVIS fee) for the university of your choice: https://fmjfee.com/i901fee/index.html
- Step 5: Complete the DS-160 to schedule your visa interview
- Be sure to print out the confirmation page with the barcode on it and bring it to the visa interview as well as all supporting documents
- Step 6: Visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate outside of the United States
- Step 7: Entire the United States on F-1 status (up to 30 days prior to the Program Start Date listed on the student’s I-20).
